Chapter 8: Adding Command Key Rules and Labels

Overview

The WebFacing Tool creates push buttons for all action function keys, or command keys, on a record format. The tool uses the available descriptions to add labels to the push buttons. While working with your application, you might notice that most command key descriptions that appear at the bottom of the original panels in the sample Order Entry application have been removed from the WebFaced user interface and have also been added to the push buttons .

The removal happens automatically if the command key descriptions follow the common user interface access (CUA) rules (for example, F3 = Exit). The missing descriptions might cause a problem because the WebFacing Tool does not have a string to place in the push button labels on the Web page. If the descriptions do not follow the CUA rules, they are not deleted, but you can supply your own rules to force deletion. On the other hand, your user interface contains enabled command keys without any visible descriptions for the keys. For example, command key 3 (for ending an application) or command key 12 (for canceling a task) are typically enabled for these tasks , but your user interface does not display descriptions for them at the bottom of the panel. Instead, the tool only inserts , for example, "CA12" for an active command key 12 in the push button label.

However, you can supply the WebFacing Tool with the command key description rules you use in your user interface, and the WebFacing Tool applies these rules to recognize your specific command key descriptions. You specify labels for these common command keys in the conversion properties so that the WebFacing Tool can label the push buttons correctly.
