So far, we've been printing color documents using the color management features of various applications.The benefit of this approach is that a single file can be output to any device for which there is a profile. But if the application you're using doesn't support color management or if you want more control than the application or printer driver provides, then it makes sense to apply color management elsewhere.

One type of application that provides advanced features and workflow enhancements for printing is a RIP, or raster image processor. RIPs convert image data into a format that is understood by a printer, and they usually have features not found in design applications.

In this chapter, we'll print images with color management using a RIP. Applying color management in a RIP isn't necessarily better than applying it in a design application it depends on your workflow and whether you will benefit from the additional features of a RIP.
