Chapter 12: Sneaking into a Computer

OVERVIEW

Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on after others have let go.

--WILLIAM FEATHER

FINDING A COMPUTER TO ATTACK IS THE FIRST STEP. BREAKING INTO THAT COMPUTER IS THE SECOND STEP. Generally, hackers don't succeed because of some innate brilliance on their part. Most hackers succeed in breaking into a computer by exploiting the carelessness, ignorance, or outright laziness on the part of the people who use or maintain the computer.

Once a computer offers an outside connection to the world through a telephone line, the Internet, or a wireless network, the first line of defense for stopping a hacker is usually a password.
