Goals and Methods

The primary objective of this book is to help the reader pass the CVoice exam (642-432), which is a required exam for the CCVP certification and for Cisco's IP Telephony Support Specialist and Rich Media Communications Specialist certifications.

Unlike most Cisco certification exams, the CVoice exam attracts two primary categories of candidates: those with a telephony background and those with a data networking background. Therefore, the first two chapters of this book provide a review of traditional telephony technology, along with a brief introduction to VoIP components. These first two chapters especially benefit readers who have a data background but lack a strong telephony background.

After getting you up to speed on basic telephony components, this book covers the CVoice exam objectives, not by "teaching to the exam," but rather by explaining exam-relevant (and real-world applicable) concepts in a logical sequence of topics. Additionally, this book reinforces learning through the following features:

  • Chapter review questions

  • Practice items

  • Real-world content not covered in the CVoice course

  • Hands-on lab exercises tailored to home lab environments
