Starting Slowly

Keeping a project running smoothly depends on many factors, including how well the team works together. To identify problems early in the project, try to complete a few simple tasks before you attempt anything complicated. Any problem will be much clearer and easier to resolve at this point.

It is very important to sort out the people problems up front. It's better to deliver little in the first iteration and instead spend time solving issues with the team. That may seem wasteful at first, but it will pay you back. Think of it as insurance. Once you are working at full steam on complicated issues, you will have a hard time differentiating between an issue with the team and an issue with the code. But in the first few iterations, when your tasks are straightforward and low risk, team issues are easy to determine and less risky to solve than they will be six iterations later.
