Chapter 17: Terms and Impression Makers for Intermission Chit-Chat

Chapter 17
Terms and Impression-Makers for Intermission Chit-Chat
I think one of the major reasons why most people don't support concerts involving Modern Music is that they
DON'T KNOW WHAT TO SAY AT INTERMISSION.
The barren puerility of "loved it!" or "hated it!" doesn't quite cut it, if you're trying to
a) make an impression
2) secure a promotion at work
iii) get a date for coffee and what-have-you apr s the concert
IV) be heard saying brilliant and insightful things
Well, once again, the Maestro has come to our aid and contributed majorly to the two lists of this chapter. These pages are the ones you should photocopy and shove in your purse, handbag, fanny pack (usually worn as a crotch pouch) etc. so they are easily accessible in an emergency if you're suddenly called upon to express an opinion about a work by Xenakis, or Stockhausen's latest opus.
In awkward situations like this, simply stall with an "It's time for my pill  just a minute please." As you search for your medication (a breath mint would serve nicely as what you're looking for), cast your eye quickly down the LIST STUFFED IN YOUR PURSE so that having "popped your pill," you can say
"Xenakis' stochastic approach has always intrigued me! 'Scuse please, gotta run!" or "Since Stockhausen's Kontakte (1959 60) combining both electronic music and musique concr te, I feel strongly, and appreciate deeply, his expansion well beyond the horizons of total serialism. Don't you think ?"
Responses of this sort usually cause the questioner to suddenly remember a hitherto-forgotten dental appointment and never again query you about anything so that at intermission you can quietly drink your gin martini in peace and solitude while others around you whisper behind their programs, "I wonder what HE thought of the first half???"
First of all:
A USEFUL LIST OF TERMS VIS- -VIS MODERN MUSIC:
integral serialism
everything's controlled
indeterminancy
who knows?
Serialism
a regular T.V. show? a fondness for Koko Puffs?
No! Look up The Fertilizer Hits the Fan (Chapter 7)
