Introduction

This chapter introduces Visual Studio 2005 to those unfamiliar with the new version of the integrated development environment (IDE). Since there are so many new features in the 2005 edition, I expect that includes everyone. I'll start by showing you how to set up the Server Explorer and Toolbar to make it easier to get started with new applications. This chapter also walks you through the (very intuitive) Visual Studio 2005 setup program and (not so intuitive) customization routines. If you've already installed Visual Studio, you can just skim this first section. However, Visual Basic developers need to take a close look at the configuration section, as I discuss re-enabling a number of features you'll miss (and I discuss later in the book). I'll also provide a brief tour of the Visual Studio IDE so that you'll know where the toolbox, Server Explorer, and other windows are located; how to customize their appearance; and how to use these tools as you develop, test, debug, and deploy applications. I'll show you how to set up database connections to your SQL Server or other data sources, including local instances of SQL Server Express edition. Remember that this is a "data-centric" book, so I'll focus quite a bit on the "data" features of the IDE. I leave many of the other UI[1] design tools and elements to other chapters (and other books).
