Hardware and Software Requirements

The minimum hardware requirements to run Java programs and a small database are a recent personal computer with 64MB of RAM, but 128MB to 256MB are recommended if you foresee running an application server. At least 300MB of hard drive space is necessary to install a JDK and development environment such as Borland JBuilder, WebGain Café, or Sun’s Forte-For-Java, in addition to a personal database.

The following are necessary or recommended, as specified, for writing and testing JDBC programs. Java 2 version 1.4 (available from http://java.sun.com/products), which bundles JDBC 1.3, is mandatory. A personal database such as Cloudscape or Hypersonic SQL, mSQL, Oracle Lite, or Sybase Lite is recommended. The simplest JDBC programs will run with the JDBC-ODBC Bridge from Sun Microsystems and Microsoft Access, but the remaining 50 percent of the API won’t work with such a database. Having access to an Oracle, a Sybase, an Informix, or DB2 server for development would be helpful, but isn’t mandatory when developing with JDBC. JDBC 3 drivers can be purchased from database vendors, but you better refer to the informative pages of their respective Web sites to get the latest information about support of this version of the API.
