3.7 Conclusion

 < Day Day Up >

In this chapter the basic concepts in Oracle database architecture, the different components, and various types of files and tablespaces used in a single stand-alone configuration of an Oracle database were explored. Because RAC configuration is only an extension to the single stand-alone configuration, many of the features and functions are similar in a RAC configuration. The handling of queries was also briefly discussed during the discussions on database buffer cache. Some new features such as undo tablespace, multiple db block size options, the concept of granules and how they are used in computing the buffer cache requirements were also introduced.

We compared a single instance configuration with a clustered configuration and listed the differences between OPS and RAC.

This concludes the first part of the book. The next part will explore the architecture of RAC. During this process the transaction management, parallel processing concepts, designing databases for RAC, and data dictionary views useful in RAC will be discussed.
