Chapter 16: Problem Diagnosis

 < Day Day Up >

16.1 Introduction

In the previous chapter we discussed the tuning of the cluster. During these discussions we analyzed the performance of the cluster interconnect, the storage subsystem, and cache transfer that happens via the cluster interconnect. Oracle scalability is measured by the number of users that can be added with increased business and when more instances are added to the cluster. However, if the amount of traffic is not something that is controllable because of the poor performance of the interconnect, the system will never be able to perform as desired, and every additional instance will probably provide a negative rather than positive impact.

How many times have database administrators had to call Oracle Support for critical problems faced in their day-to-day functioning? Some of the common errors encountered are ORA-600 and ORA-7445.When these errors are encountered, it is always expected that Oracle Support be notified of these errors. These errors are normally machine critical.

In this chapter we will look at some of the diagnosis that will help in problem solving. Most of the information in this chapter is either from Oracle's technology network[1] or from Metalink.[2]

Apart from these machine-critical Oracle errors, there are others that are also worth investigating, especially in a RAC environment.

[1]OracleTechnology Network (OTN) can be accessed from http://otn.oracle.com. Subscription to OTN is free, and can be obtained by registering at the same site.

[2]Metalink can be accessed from http://metalink.oracle.com. Metalink access requires the user to have a customer support identification (CSI) number. This number can be obtained by subscribing to Oracle support services.
