Chapter 15 -- SMTP Transport Configuration

Chapter 15

About This Chapter

The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), introduced in Chapter 11, does not provide a secure method for transporting and delivering electronic messages. As its name implies, it is a simple protocol. It was developed in the early 1980s when Internet security issues were still a problem of the future. The vulnerability of SMTP systems was first exploited in a large-scale Internet attack in 1988—the Morris Internet Worm was the first virus flooding the Net with e-mail messages. With Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, you can effectively put an end to e-mail worms, regardless of the mechanism they abuse, and protect against malicious attempts to swamp your messaging infrastructure.

The core transport engine of Exchange 2000 Server is the SMTP service of Microsoft Windows 2000. SMTP is a very efficient transport protocol; it can transfer messages, for instance, up to 300% faster than X.400. SMTP is very popular, and it is hard to think of a professional messaging system that does not support it. SMTP is easy to configure, but to provide security, you must configure your SMTP virtual servers carefully, especially when connected to the Internet.

This chapter deals with the configuration of SMTP virtual servers and the customization of the SMTP service. It does not, however, discuss the administration of the SMTP Connector, which provides fine-grained control over the sending of e-mail messages to remote locations. Administration of the SMTP Connector is covered, together with other connector types, in Chapter 16, "Message Routing Configuration."

Before You Begin

To complete this chapter:

  • Prepare your test environment according to the descriptions given in the "Getting Started" section of "About This Book."
  • You need to be familiar with the general concepts of creating and configuring protocol virtual servers using Exchange System Manager, as explained in Chapter 11, "Internet-Based Client Access."
