Although it is best to configure your PHP during installation, a number of parameters can be changed afterwards. The php.ini file which you copied to the proper directory during installation, contains a number of parameters for how PHP is run (Figures A.10 and A.11). You can make changes by editing these parameters and restarting your Web server application. If you ever run into problems, you can reinstate the original php.ini file by copying the php.ini-dist file that came with the original package.

Figure A.10. The php.ini document is the most important file for determining how PHP functions.

In order for PHP to support databases, generate images on the fly, use mcrypt () and so forth, you will need to download other libraries and packages and make these available to PHP by stating their location either during installation or by altering the php.ini file later. See the file itself and the PHP manual for more information on this topic.
