What is custom?

Custom means ‚“made to order. ‚½ Custom deployment could be as simple as writing custom scripts to install a commercial off the shelf (COTS) application that integrates with the client ‚ s existing data, as complex as tailoring the entire application development and installation to specific requirements of a client, or something in between. This is the deployment method most independent developers and small consultancies prefer because it is the greatest revenue generator. You work with the client from conceptual design through installation and support.

This method is often chosen because the client can ‚ t find a COTS application, so they hire an individual or company to develop a made to order application.

Custom deployment is the method of choice for large corporations with in-house information technology departments. They are their own client. They constantly receive requests from different departments within the corporation to create new reports , develop tools, or full blown applications, most of which will be custom.

There are many great COTS applications out there. Most developers we know (corporate, small consultancies, and independents) try to steer their clients to something that already exists. If what is out there doesn ‚ t meet their needs, most are more than happy to create a custom application for them.

There are a whole slew of issues in developing and deploying custom applications. Besides presenting you with all of the deployment issues in this book, we must refer you to ‚“The Software Developers Guide, Third Edition ‚½ by Whil Hentzen for the rest of the story.
