• Deciding on a partition scheme

• Selecting the installation partition and choosing its file system

• Assigning a computer name and IP addressing scheme

• Reading the Release Notes on the product CD

• Backing up your data, including the boot and system partitions and System State information

• Checking the System log in the Event Viewer for hardware-related issues

• Using the product CD to check the system’s hardware compatibility for upgrading

• Reviewing your partition scheme and modifying it if necessary

• Breaking mirror sets and deleting volume sets, stripe sets, and stripe sets with parity (Windows NT 4 only)

• Applying Service Pack 5 or later (Windows NT 4 only)

• Disconnecting your UPS device if you have one
