Scaling the Image

 < Day Day Up >

The package you pasted in the new document is slightly larger than the canvas, and you want to scale it down. There is a Scale tool that you can use, or you can simply drag one of the corner handles to make the image smaller. You can also precisely scale the image by a percentage.

The one thing to keep in mind is that this image is a bitmap, which means that you can make the image smaller, but you shouldn't make it larger. The resolution of the image is 72 pixels per inch, and there are not enough pixels to increase the size. If you increase the size, the image quality suffers, and you will not be happy with the resulting image.

1.

Select the image with the Pointer tool.

A blue border appears around the image.

2.

Select the Scale tool from the Tools panel.

Handles appear around the image and on the sides.

The Scale tool can be used both to scale and rotate an object. Move the pointer close to (but not touching) one of the corner handles. The pointer changes to a circular arrow, indicating that you are in rotating mode.

Move the pointer on top of one of the handles. The pointer changes to a double-ended arrow, indicating that you are in scale mode.

3.

Hold down Alt (PC) or Option (Mac) and, using the Scale pointer, drag the corner handle toward the center. Release the mouse when the package is smaller, as shown here.

Adding the modifier keys (Alt and Option) as you use the Scale tool resizes the image from the center. If you don't use the modifier keys, you then need to move the package back to the center of the canvas.

4.

Press Enter (PC) or Return (Mac) to release the Scale tool and change the package size.

Note

If you choose to drag one of the corner handles with the Pointer tool instead of the Scale tool, you need to hold down Shift as you drag to proportionally scale the image. If you don't, your image could appear distorted. With the Scale tool, you do not have to hold down Shift as you drag.

5.

Save the file.
