Editing Bitmap Objects

 < Day Day Up >

Photographs or scanned art can be opened or imported into Fireworks. Fireworks recognizes the following bitmap file formats: Photoshop native files (PSD), TIFF, JPEG, GIF, BMP, PICT (Macintosh), PNG, and TGA. After you have opened or imported an image, you can make a variety of changes.

Before you can change pixels in a bitmap image, you first select the area you want to affect. After you make a selection, you can edit only those pixels within the selection. Pixels outside the selection are protected from change. This exercise introduces you to the bitmap editing tools. You will learn to make selections, change colors in the image, and clone part of the image.

When editing bitmaps in bitmap mode, you will either be editing pixel by pixel (with the Pencil, Brush, or Eraser tool) or editing a selection of pixels. Use the selection tools to select pixels either by their color values or by their location within an area. Only those pixels within the selection marquee are affected by any changes you make.

In this exercise, you will edit some bitmap images and combine them to create one image. Before you start, copy the Lessons folder from the CD provided with this book to your hard drive if you haven't done so already. Create a new folder within the Lessons folder and name it Projects. You will save all of the work you create within that folder.

1.

Open the pecan_cluster_raw.png file in the Media folder within the Lesson01 folder.

This file is a picture taken with a digital camera of a piece of candy on gray cardboard. You want to use the candy, but you want to delete the gray background.

2.

Select the Pointer tool on the Tools panel and then click the candy image.

A blue border appears around the image to indicate that it is selected. The Property inspector reports that the object is a bitmap and shows its size (W and H) and its position on the canvas (X and Y). You could enter new values to resize the image in the Property inspector, but you don't need to do that for this step.
