Exporting your Pages for Dreamweaver

 < Day Day Up >

In Lesson 8, you learned how to set the optimization for slices and export your pages as HTML. At this point, you have exported only one of the pages, and you saved the exported files in the Lesson08 folder. That was fine for learning the exporting process, but now you want to export all of your pages and create a cohesive Web site. The Web site referred to in this book is the local storage location of your files. Typically, you store your files in a folder on your local disk. Within that folder, you can then create subfolders to further organize your files. For example, you can put product pages in one folder and company information in another. In this exercise, you will export all of your Fireworks files and save them in a folder.

Organizing your files in a folder enables you to easily upload your files to the Web server. You can then copy the entire folder to the Web server, or you can use the FTP feature in Dreamweaver to upload the files to the Web server.

1.

Open the home_page.png file you completed in Lesson 8.

If you no longer have that file, you can open the home_page.png file in the Start folder within the Lesson11 folder.

Before exporting your files, you need to check several things:

  • Check that your slices have the proper optimization settings (as discussed in Lesson 8). Remember that each slice can be optimized differently.

  • Check that your slices have names assigned. The name of the slice determines the name for the exported image. For example, if you set GIF as the optimization format for a slice and the slice name is candy, then the name of the exported file is candy.gif. Slices without names are assigned the filename. The settings you assign in the HTML Setup dialog box control the suffix of the filename. For example, if you use the settings shown in the following figure, then the filenames for unnamed slices in the about.png file would be about_01.gif, about_02.gif, and so on.

  • Confirm that the option Include Areas without Slices is checked so that the entire page is exported to HTML. The areas without slices are exported using the naming scheme you assign in the HTML Setup dialog box, as described in the preceding paragraph.

2.

Choose File > Export. Navigate to the HTML folder in the Lessons folder.

For this exercise, you will export all of the files to this folder and place the images in the images folder. Verify the filename for your HTML file. For this exercise, make sure the name is home_page.htm.

Note

The HTML folder already contains a file (request.htm). You will use this file later in this lesson.

3.

Select Put Images in Subfolder.

This option creates a folder for your image (named images) and places all the exported graphics within the folder.

4.

Click Export.

The HTML page and all its graphics are created.

5.

Repeat steps 1 thru 4 for your about.png, facts.png, music.png, shop.png, and template.png files.

Check the HTML setup for each file and use about.htm for the About page, facts.htm for the Facts page, music.htm for the Music page, shop.htm for the Shop page, and template.htm for the template file.

Note

Your files were created by making a copy of your home page file. The default name for the HTML file is that original name. Make sure to check the HTML filename for each file you export. Also, the top portion (the logo, the buttons, the stick, and the header) should be exactly the same in each document. Similarly, the slices and the names of each slice in the top portion of each document should be the same. When you export the next file, you will receive a warning that an image exists and asking if you want to replace that file. Since all of your slices for the top portion are the same, click OK to replace the file.
