Adding a Slice

 < Day Day Up >

You can add a slice to the page in several ways. You can use the Slice tool and draw the slice, or you can select an object and have Fireworks create the slice for you based on the size and placement of the selected object.

1.

Open your home_page.png file from Projects folder if it is not already open.

You can use the home_page_L7.png in the Start folder within the Lesson07 folder if you no longer have your file. Use Save As and remove the L7 from the name, and then save the new file in the Projects folder.

2.

Select the white square on the Specials layer.

The image of the girl is on top of the square. Make sure that you select the square, not the girl.

3.

Choose Edit > Insert > Rectangular Slice.

A slice is created on the object. If you want the slice to be the same size as the object, this is the quickest method.

4.

Select the Slice tool on the Tools panel and then draw a rectangle over the text block on the left of the canvas.

You can adjust or move the slice with the Pointer tool once it is created. Drag any of the corner handles to change the size. Use the red slice guides to help you as you add slices to the page. Remember that the red guides are defining the HTML table for the page.

5.

Draw another slice on the January text.

Each month will have a separate slice, and you want them all the same size. Make sure that this slice is wide enough for all of the other months to fit, too.

Tip

Since the September text is the longest, you could draw the slice on this text first and then move it over the January text.

6.

Switch to the Pointer tool and then hold down Alt (PC) or Option (Mac) as you drag the slice to make a copy of it. Add Shift as you drag to constrain the movement to a vertical line. Choose Edit > Repeat Duplicate to create slices for the remaining months.

You learned this method for creating multiple copies of an element in Lesson 5.

For this example, the slices need to cover the text. You can adjust the leading of the text to match the individual slices, or move the slices if they are in the wrong position.

Tip

If you have Snap to Guides turned on, your slices snap to the nearest guide as you move them. Turn off Snap to Guides to make moving the slices easier.
