About This Book

Each topical Exam Cram chapter follows a regular structure and includes graphical cues about important or useful information. Here's the structure of a typical chapter:

  • Opening hotlists ” Each chapter begins with a list of the terms, tools, and techniques that you must learn and understand before you can be completely comfortable with that chapter's subject matter. The hotlists are followed by one or two introductory paragraphs to set the stage for the rest of the chapter.

  • Topical coverage ” After the opening hotlists, each chapter covers a series of at least four topics related to the chapter's title. Throughout these sections, I highlight topics or concepts likely to appear on a test by using a special Exam Alert layout, like this:

This is what an Exam Alert looks like. Normally an Exam Alert stresses concepts, terms, software, or activities that are likely to relate to one or more certification test questions. For that reason, any information offset in an Exam Alert format is worthy of considerable attention on your part. Indeed, most of the information on the Cram Sheet appears as Exam Alerts within the chapters.

Pay close attention to material flagged as an Exam Alert; although all the information in this book pertains to what you need to know to pass the exam, I highlight certain items that are especially important. Because this book's material is very condensed, I recommend using this book along with other resources to achieve the maximum benefit.

In addition to the Exam Alerts, I have provided Tips, Notes, and Cautions that help build a better foundation for J2SE knowledge. Although the information might not be on the exam, it is certainly related and will help you become a better developer.

This is how Tips are formatted. Keep your eyes open for these elements, and you'll become a J2SE developer guru in no time!

  • Details and resources ” Every chapter ends with a "Need to Know More?" section, which provides direct pointers to Sun and third-party resources offering more details on the chapter's subject.

Chapter 19, "The Essay Exam," includes a sample written test that gives you a good review of the essay exam. This part of the certification is actually easier than the objective exam you take for the Sun Certified Java Programmer exam, if you develop the solution as the book suggests.

I've included a few appendixes that should provide all the information you need for the nuts and bolts of UML, the code style that Sun likes, and documentation standards that will help you document your project, which tends to improve the quality of your work. You'll also find a glossary that defines terms and an index you can use to track down where terms appear in the book.

Finally, the tear-out Cram Sheet at the front of this book is a condensed collection of facts, figures, and tips that you should study before writing any code. Also, look at the Cram Sheet one last time just before taking the essay exam. Unlike the SCJP exam that tests fine details, the SCJD is looking for a general understanding of concepts. The Cram Sheet helps you see the difference.
