Summary

 <  Day Day Up  >

We really covered a lot of territory in this chapter. First, I related how NNLS is distributed and how you can secure an evaluation copy to use in this book's lab exercises. Then, we talked about the five tasks you need to complete in order to prepare for an NNLS installation:

  • Meet system requirements.

  • Make sure NTP is functioning properly.

  • Configure SLP.

  • Enable multicasting.

  • Configure your hosts file.

We then talked about the difference between express and custom installations and performed a custom installation on your server. The next topic addressed was how to use the Red Carpet daemon (rcd) to automate the update process in NNLS. You then completed a lab exercise where you used Red Carpet to download an update to your system and apply it.

With Red Carpet out of the way, I gave you a down-and-dirty review of how eDirectory works, including objects, properties, rights, syntax, partitioning, and replication. We also discussed how eDirectory is integrated with the NNLS LDAP service.

We then turned our attention to a discussion of the various administration utilities used to manage eDirectory, including the various command-line utilities (such as ndsconfig and ndsbackup), iManager, and iMonitor.

To end this chapter, we spent some time discussing how to use iMonitor to perform an eDirectory health check and how to repair the eDirectory database.

In the next chapter, we will move on to the next two NNLS components you will need to know how to deploy in order to pass the CLE exam: eGuide and Linux User Management (LUM).
