Macromedia Flash MX Communication Tools

When you install the authoring components into Macromedia Flash MX, a series of new elements will be added to your Flash MX authoring environment:

  • Communication App Inspector. A tool used to connect and control application instances that are running on the Flash Communication Server. It provides the Live Log window used to monitor trace activity from server-side ActionScript (SSAS).

  • Flash Communication UI Components. A series of pre-built Communication User Interface components that allow you to quickly build applications for Flash Communication Server. As for most Flash UI components, you can control these using ActionScript. Each UI component has a custom ActionScript object with methods and properties. Each component also responds to the methods and properties associated with the MovieClip class, such as the _visible property.

  • Flash Communication UI Component Dictionary. A detailed library describing the component ActionScript object's method, properties, and events. The dictionary is available through the Reference panel (Shift+F1), as well as through the Actions Toolbox in the ActionScript Editor (F9).

  • Flash Communication Object Dictionary. A detailed library describing the objects that you can use with the Flash Communication Server. This dictionary is available through the Reference panel (Shift+F1) and the Actions Toolbox in the ActionScript Editor (F9).

  • NetServices and RecordSet Class Files. New ActionScript objects that connect the Flash player with Flash Remoting MX-enabled services. The RecordSet object is a new object that lets you build and interact with a standard database query object. These classes must be manually included into your ActionScript.

  • NetConnection Debugger. A new debugging utility that lets you monitor activity between the Macromedia Flash player and Communication Server or Flash Remoting MX server.

As you can see, many new features are now available that extend Flash MX authoring abilities . This chapter will step through these elements.

Note

For your convenience, Appendixes B, C, and D contain details of every Flash ActionScript method, property, and event, including full details of the ActionScript objects for the Communication UI components.
