Software Engineering Institute: www.sei.cmu.edu

The Software Engineering Institute (SEI) is a research and development center sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense. It aims to provide the technical leadership to advance the practice of software engineering. One of its main activities was the formulation of The Capability Maturity Model (CMM) for software ( www.sei.cmu.edu/cmm/cmm.html ) for judging the maturity of the software processes of an organization. The CMM model helps organizations identify the key practices required to help them increase the maturity of their software development processes.

This Web site provides many resources to increase awareness of the development of ethical and professional practices that address the impacts of software engineering and related technologies on society.

The AgileAlliance: www.agilealliance.com/home

The AgileAlliance is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the concepts of agile software development, and helping organizations adopt those concepts. Its main principles are outlined by the Manifesto for Agile Software Development ( www.agilemanifesto.org/ ). This community is important for those who are interested in agile software development methods (see Chapter 2).

This site is a portal for information on refactoring. It contains general information about refactoring, a catalog of common refactorings, and tools to help the refactoring process.

ACM s Committee on Women and Computing: www.acm.org/women/

This committee of the ACM on Women in Computing informs and supports women in computing. It has contacts with computer scientists, educators, employers , and policymakers to improve working and learning environments for women. The Web site presents resources about the topic and relevant information.

The Association for Women in Computing (AWC): www.awc-hq.org/

The Association for Women in Computing is a nonprofit professional organization for women and men who have an interest in information and technology. The Association is dedicated to the advancement of women in the technology fields.

The Knowledge Management Resource Center: www.kmresource.com/

This site offers a comprehensive collection of knowledge management resources. In The Knowledge Management Explorer, the material is organized in 17 categories; in the Knowledge Management Bookstore, 219 titles about knowledge management, organizational intelligence, and closely aligned areas of thought and practice are listed.
