7.14 Conclusion

Some professional head football coaches are complimented as great game day coaches because they function with competency, creativity, and a joyful work ethic when the pressure is on during crisp, autumn Sunday afternoons. In my case, I am not so sure about the greatness, but I do love the action when a project is really kicking. Instead of abhorring problems, I attack them the moment I sense trouble, because I enjoy the challenge of properly identifying and then resolving them, preferably before others have taken note of them. Unlike the head coach of a sports team, however, project managers never possess unencumbered autonomy. You may be in charge of the project but probably little else. This is why having a strong set of interpersonal, political, and problem-solving skills, as well as a long list of allies and compatriots upon whom you can call for personal and organizational support, is extremely critical. [3] This is also why you need to understand the realities of your project, your environment, and your team so you can help everyone be successful without anyone, or everyone, going crazy.

[3]These skills or attributes are covered in Chapter 16.
