Send Updates

Whenever the information in your address card changes (your "Me Card," as explained on page 465), your Mac can send that new information out to your world. You can do this manually or have it done automatically whenever you change the information on your card. You must first have created at least one Group (see pages 470472).

If you have some information on your card that you don't really want publicized, see page 482 to learn how to make some of the data private.

Anything you have in your "Notes" field will not be sent out as updates unless you choose it to be; see page 482.

To send updates of your card manually

1.

From the File menu, choose "Send Updates…."

2.

In the dialog box that appears (shown below), choose which Groups to send the information to.

Put a checkmark in the box next to each Group you want to send updates to.

3.

The recipients will get email messages that include your vCard, as shown below. They single-click on the card icon.

4.

If the recipient is on a Mac running some version of OS X, the Mac adds your information to her Address Book. If that person already has you in her Address Book, a window appears asking what she wants to do with the information, as shown below. She makes a choice, and there you are!

A vCard is cross-platform, so even recipients on PCs will receive your updated vCard and be able to add it to their contact programs.

To send updates of your card automatically

You must have at least one Group created before you choose this option.

1.

From the Address Book menu, choose "Preferences…."

2.

Click the General tab.

3.

Put a check in the box to "Notify people when my card changes," as shown on the following page. Close the preferences.

Now whenever you make a change to your "Me Card," the Mac will ask if you want to notify people of the changes. If you click "Notify" in the little window, you will see the window shown in Step 2 on the opposite page. Everything else happens as explained on these two pages.
