Export an Address or a Group of Addresses

You can export a single address, a collection of selected addresses, or a Group. Once exported, other Address Book users can import the addresses into their applications. There are several simple ways to export:

  • Drag a Group, a name, or a collection of names from the Address Book and drop them on the Desktop or inside any Finder window. It will make vCard icons like the ones shown below.

Drag a selection of cards to the Desktop and the Mac creates a vCard.

Drag a Group to the Desktop and the Mac creates a vCard. You'll have to rename it.

  • Option-drag a Group name and you'll get a separate vCard for each person in the Group. They all land one on top of the other so it looks like just one cardyou have to drag the cards off of each other.

  • Select the Group, a name, or a collection of names in the Address Book. From the File menu, choose "Export card…" or "Export Group card…." You will be asked to name the exported vCard and where you want to save it. An icon like the ones shown above appears in the location where you chose to save it.

You can send the vCard to anyone with a fairly recent version of Address Book. The recipient double-clicks the file and those addresses appear in his Address Book. You can also send the vCard to people with any other contact database, even if it's not Address Book. You can even send it to people using PCs.

If any one of the names in the vCard is already in that person's Address Book, a notice appears telling him there are duplicates and asking if he wants to update the existing cards.
