Use Address Book

The Address Book found in webMail is similar to the Address Book on your hard disk (as discussed in Chapter 16). You can synchronize the information in Address Book on your hard disk with .Mac's Address Book. (see page 298). There are two different ways to access your Address Book information in webMail. Each method provides different options.

Open Address Book from the navigation bar

Look carefully and you'll notice there are two links to Address Book on the .Mac Mail page. Click the "Address Book" link in the navigation bar (below-left) to open webMail's Address Book (shown at the bottom of this page).

The "Address Book" link in the navigation bar is available no matter which page of Mac.com you're working in. Click this link, checkmark one or more addresses in the Address Book window (below), then click the "Compose" button. An email form opens, addressed to the people you selected.

Open Address Book from the toolbar

Click the "Compose" icon in Mail's toolbar (shown on the right) to open a Compose Message pane (below). Click the Address Book icon in the toolbar to open another Mail pane that contains your Address Book information, plus "Destination" pop-up menus from which you can choose a field to which a person's email address is added.

Cc stands for Carbon Copy or Courtesy Copy.

Bcc stands for Blind Carbon Copy.

Addresses you put in the Bcc field are invisible to other recipients of the message.

In the "Destination" column, choose the address field you want that person's address to be in (To, Cc, or Bcc). At the bottom of the pane, click the "Apply" button to return to the Compose Message pane. webMail automatically enters the recipients' email addresses into the various address fields that you designated.

Synchronize .Mac's Address Book with your Mac's Address Book

Using iSync, another feature of a .Mac account, you can synchronize the Address Book information on your hard disk to the Mac.com webMail Address Book so you always have access to current contact information, no matter where you are. See Chapter 11 for details about iSync.

To set up syncing for webMail's Address Book

Go to the Mac.com site, click the "Mail" link, and log in to your account.

1.

In the Mail pane, click the "Address Book" icon in the navigation bar.

2.

In the Address Book pane that opens, click the Preferences icon in the toolbar (shown below).

3.

In the Address Book Preferences pane (below), check the box to "Turn on .Mac Address Book Synchronization."

4.

Click the "Save" button.

The next time you use iSync, your Address Book information will be synced and updated. If you add new contacts while using .Mac Address Book, the contact information will be added to your computer's Address Book the next time you use iSync.

Set .Mac Address Book preferences

The Address Book Preferences window (shown below) contains pop-up menus that let you set some .Mac Address Book behaviors. Make selections from the pop-up menus, then click "Save."
