What do network servers do? They provide network services. When things get weird with Windows Server 2003 and you can't find anything wrong with the network, visit the Services tool, as shown in Figure 23-1.
To view this display, follow this menu sequence: Start Administrative Tools Services. Then click the Services entry to view the list of services currently installed on Windows Server 2003.
Be sure to check the entries for key services such as Computer Browser, the Server service, and the Workstation service. Make sure that the Status field says Started and that the Startup field is properly set. (It should read Automatic for services that are supposed to launch upon startup.)
Many times, when the network shows no obvious problems, you may find that a key service has been paused or stopped or has simply quit for some reason. If the service has stopped, you should refer to Event Viewer to find out why because a stopped service usually indicates a serious problem that will recur.
