Getting Pushy with Users

team lib

At some point during your management lifetime, you may need to disable, rename, or delete user accounts. You can do all this using Active Directory Users and Computers.

Disabling a user account is when you turn off the account so that it can't be used to gain entry to the system. To disable an account, highlight the user account and then choose Action Disable Account. When you create a user using the Setup wizard (see the "Creating Users" section earlier in this chapter), you can select the Account Disabled check box, and the user account is disabled until you enable it.

Renaming a user account changes the human-friendly name of the account. Just select the user account and then choose Action Rename. A dialog box prompts you for the new name. Note that a name change doesn't change the Security Identifier (SID) of the account.

Deleting a user account removes the user account from the system. Highlight the user account you want to delete and then choose Action Delete. You're prompted to confirm the deletion. When you delete an account, it's gone for good. The SID used by the deleted account is never reused. Creating a new account with the same configuration as the deleted account still results in a different account because a new SID is used; therefore, as far as the accounts database is concerned , it's a new account.

When users leave your organization, you need to decide whether you want to retain their old user accounts to use for their replacements . This is your best option because it retains all department and group settings, but it does mean that you have to change all the personal information so that it relates to the new user.
