Other Internet Resources

This section covers other resources on the Internet that are somehow related to FreeBSD in a general sense. Included in this section are the home pages for some of the software used and described in this book.

Websites

www.x.org

This is the home page for the X.org Foundation and the Xorg project, which is the free implementation of the X Window System (X11) included with FreeBSD. This is where you will find documentation and such related to the X11 system.

www.gnu.org

The home page for the GNU (a recursive acronym that stands for GNU's Not UNIX) project. Many of the utilities included with FreeBSDsuch as the GCC compiler, the GAWK pattern-matching language, the Emacs editor, and the f77 FORTRAN compilerare from the GNU project. This site contains information on almost all the GNU project's software.

www.gnome.org

The home page for the GNOME Desktop Environment project. GNOME news, tutorials, and so on can be found here.

www.kde.org

The home page for the K Desktop Environment project. KDE news and tutorials are available here, as well as documentation on the many applications built for KDE.

www.apache.org

This is the home page for the Apache web server projectthe most popular web server in the world. It is free and is the web server of choice for FreeBSD. This site also contains information about projects that can be used to extend Apache's functionality, such as PHP, Perl, TCL, and more.

www.mysql.com

MySQL is the open-source SQL database most commonly used with FreeBSD. This site contains documentation, tutorials, and many other resources for the MySQL database software.

The home page of the ubiquitous Sendmail mail transfer agent, which is the default MTA included with FreeBSD.

Although it is not FreeBSD-specific, this news site often contains articles of general interest to FreeBSD users and sometimes runs FreeBSD-specific articles.

Usenet Newsgroups

The following nonFreeBSD-specific newsgroups are available on Usenet (contact your ISP to find out what news server you should be using to access Usenet).

General UNIX Newsgroups

These newsgroups cover topics that are not specific to FreeBSD but are of interest to UNIX users in general. For example, they cover UNIX administration practices, general UNIX security issues, general UNIX shell use, and so on.
