Minimizing an application's windows shrinks them to thumbnail- sized versions sitting at the right end of the Dock, near the Trash . Minimizing windows allows you to get certain windows off the screen while keeping others active. A minimized application is still running; it just takes up none of your Desktop space. You can easily restore a minimized window at any time.

1.
Minimize a Window

The yellow control button at the top left of any window minimizes that window. Click the button, and the window shrinks into the Dock using the "Genie Effect"the window morphs into a flexible shape that condenses as it "flows" into an icon in the Dock.

You can also minimize a window by selecting Minimize from the Window menu, or by pressing .

A minimized window in the Dock is marked with the icon of the application it's a part of, such as Safari's "compass" icon for web pages, or the Finder's "Mac face" icon for Finder windows.

NOTE

Some kinds of windows, such as QuickTime movies, will continue to play even if minimized into the Dock.

2.
Restore a Window

A minimized window can be restored by simply clicking its icon in the Dock.

3.
Use a Different Minimize Effect

The Genie Effect looks cool the first few hundred times, but eventually you might want to use a minimize effect that's a little quicker and less ostentatious.

You can select the minimize effect from the Dock Preferences. From the Apple menu, choose Dock, Dock Preferences . In the dialog box that opens, select Scale Effect from the Minimize using drop-down list. The Scale Effect option simply scales the window directly into its Dock position, rather than following the smooth curved path of the Genie Effect (which takes a little bit longer).

TIPS

You can also select the minimize effect from the Dock's contextual menu. Control +click (or right-click) the vertical dividing line in the middle of the Dock; from the contextual menu select Minimize using , and then choose the effect you want.

If you like showing off Mac OS X's graphical talents to your friends and co-workers , you can run the Genie or Scale Effect in slow motion by holding down the Shift key as you minimize the window.
