124. Schedule Automatic Startup and Shutdown

To make your computer go to sleep, shut down, or start itself up, you don't have to rely on a certain period of inactivity. If you prefer, you can have the computer turn itself off or on at a specific time of day. While the computer is off or sleeping, it's still keeping time and can react according to your needs so that you don't have to remember to put it to sleep at the end of the day or to wait for it to boot up in the mornings.

1.
Open the Energy Saver Preferences

Open the System Preferences application (under the Apple menu); click Energy Saver to bring up the Energy Saver Preferences pane. Click the Schedule button to access a sheet showing the scheduling options.

2.
Enable Automatic Startup

Select the Start up or wake check box to enable the computer to start up (or wake itself from sleep) automatically at a given time. Then, from the drop-down menu, select whether you want the computer to activate at a certain time every day, on all weekdays, on weekends, or on a single certain weekday.

Finally, set the activation time using the time input fields. Click each number to adjust it, or use the Tab key to move between fields; then use the arrow keys, Up / Down buttons , or the number keys to set the appropriate time for the computer to activate.

NOTE

The settings you specify here are applied when you click the OK button to close the configuration sheet.

TIP

If you don't want to be awakened by the computer's loud "bong" sound when it wakes up in the next room in the wee hours of the morning, and your external speakers cannot be turned off, try plugging in a pair of headphones; this will mute the sound in the computer's primary speakers .

3.
Enable Automatic Sleep or Shutdown

If you want the computer to automatically shut itself down, first select the second check box that lets you set the shutdown time. From the drop-down list, select whether you want the computer to shut itself down completely or to simply sleep. Then you can select a day scheme and a time just as you did with the automatic startup settings.
