4.12 Entering and Exiting Configuration Mode

The JUNOS CLI gives you two ways to enter configuration mode. The first is by using the edit command; the second is by using the configure command. The following example shows you how to enter the configuration mode using each of the different commands:

lab@Chicago> edit Entering configuration mode [edit] lab@Chicago# lab@Chicago> configure Entering configuration mode [edit] lab@Chicago#

Upon entering the configuration mode, you will notice the word edit in brackets above the prompt. This is tells you that you are in configuration mode and is referred to in JUNOS as a configuration-mode banner. When you change positions in the hierarchy, the banner will change to let you know where you are.

To move back to the operational mode, you can exit the configuration mode by typing exit at the command line. When you type exit and press the enter key, Exiting configuration mode is displayed on the screen, and the configuration-mode banner goes away. This returns you to an operational-mode prompt.

[edit] lab@Chicago# exit Exiting configuration mode lab@Chicago>
