This chapter describe some of the past and current traffic-engineering implementations . It identified the problems that traffic engineering is intended to solve. It described different options for traffic engineering and focused on MPLS as the most complete option available. The chapter also pointed out the need for full awareness of not only the logical routed portion of a network, but also the underlying transport mechanisms, and physical topology. This chapter provided an overview of MPLS and its base operation functions, including label assignment. Following the discussion of label assignment, this chapter introduced methods of configuring LSPs, including static, signaled, and signaled with constraints. The signaling protocols in this chapter included RSVP and LDP. This chapter also discussed the TED and its relationship to CSPF. The section covering CCC also defined a method for traffic engineering at Layer 2 of the OSI reference model. |
