Introduction

Overview

Migrating your environment from the Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0 operating system to the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 operating system offers tremendous advantages in system performance, security, and features. This book provides clear, concise migration information targeted to the unique needs of small and medium- sized organizations, including migration information for the following server roles: domain controller, DHCP server, WINS server, remote access server, file server, print server, and Web server.

The chapters in this book are designed to provide the simplest and most reliable migration path or paths for each service, as well as all the steps required to support an end-to-end migration for each. This information is useful for organizations that are migrating their entire network or that are migrating individual services to a server running Windows Server 2003, and that have the following characteristics:

  • Between 10 and 1000 network users.

  • A single Windows NT 4.0 domain environment, which they plan to migrate to a single Windows Server 2003 Active Directory directory service domain.

  • Three or fewer physical locations.

  • Servers currently running Windows NT 4.0 that meet the hardware requirements to run Windows Server 2003, or plans to purchase these servers.

For information about migrating servers on larger networks, for more complex scenarios, or for services not covered in this book, see the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Deployment Kit , which is available on the Web at http://www.microsoft.com/reskit.
