Chapter 8. Privacy

Chapter 8. Privacy

Part of the inhumanity of the computer is that, once it is completely programmed and working smoothly, it is completely honest.

Isaac Asimov

Privacy is a necessary component of any security discussion. Privacy and security must be considered separately, as well as together. Threads of privacy are visible throughout our procedure of building security in to a system or product. The privacy examined in this chapter consists of a group of issues that are inherently privacy and not directly security.

The notion of privacy is protected by governmental policies and laws in certain cases. To be well versed in wireless security, you must have a basic grasp of wireless privacy issues. In this chapter we take a look at issues of online privacy, the differences between online and wireless privacy, current legislation, and the effect of location-based marketing on wireless systems and consumers.
