links forming a chain

Another way of remembering things in a sequence is to use the Link system of memory. Let s try these random 15 words:

field

ashtray

ant

axe

newspaper

chair

calculator

bread

ice

girl

tie

cow

book

shoestring

fish

This is how to do it: the first word is your starting-point, your first link in the chain. You then associate it with the next word in a ridiculous, exaggerated way “ the sillier images you get the better! If the images are too mundane, everyday or logical you will not remember them.

In this case you start with the word field and associate that with ashtray. Think of an enormous ashtray, big as a flying saucer that has landed in a field. Now you take the next word on the list, ant and associate that with the previous word, which was ashtray. Imagine an ant sitting on the edge of that huge ashtray smoking a cigarette! The next association is between ant and axe. Maybe the ant needed an axe to cut off the ash from his cigarette? The next word is newspaper and as the ant didn t have a pair of scissors he used his axe instead to take cuttings from his newspaper. The next word is chair. Imagine a chair wrapped up with the newspapers, or a chair made of papier m ch ! In one of the arms of the chair there was a built-in calculator in the form of a loaf of bread with buttons made of ice . A girl comes by and she is all covered in ice. She is wearing a big tie , it is so big that she could use it as a lasso and catch a cow with it. The cow was very upset because it had just started to read a good book! The book had been read so many times it was held together by a shoestring, so long that it could be used for catching fish.

You could make a story of it if you like, but the principle as such is very simple. Just remember to make the associations silly, exaggerated, ridiculous, absurd, rude, moving, humorous , full of colour, bigger/smaller or anything else so the images are unique and unusual!
