the unknown brain

We actually know very little about the way a brain functions. Most of what we do know has been ˜ discovered in brain research during the last 10 to 15 years .

The information that comes in through our senses is filtered and compared with previous experiences. The impressions are being kneaded in mysterious ways, plastered and painted . Most of these impressions are well known to us in one form or another. Memory offers a fine scale map, where almost every piece of information will find its place “ consciously or unconsciously.

When we come across something absolutely new, as with the picture on the next page, it will cause disruption in our brains . What is in this chaos of an apparently random pattern of black and white patches?

Your brain tries desperately to grasp the meaning of the pattern. Most people are unable to interpret the picture. Let me give you some clues: what is meant to be in the picture is a part of something that is real, a live being, very familiar to you. Now try again! Could it be a face? A woman ? A dog? A horse? When you think you have discerned something meaningful in the pattern, have a look at page 104, where you will find a picture of what is in this pattern.

When you have seen the original, compare the two pictures. Can you see it now? How do you compare?

Most people look for outstanding features, things that are unique or typical. There is, of course, a reason for that. When you are in a complex situation, for instance in a traffic jam during rush hour , you have to interpret the elements in the right way in order to survive it.
