Chapter 10. Application Deployment Investigation

 < Day Day Up >

This chapter covers the following topics:

  • Using application deployment investigation

  • Using application deployment reports

Throughout this book, you have learned about the various components in the Cisco Security Agent (CSA) architecture that enable you to protect endpoints and granularly control applications on those systems. Although this product provides you with a great advantage and is an excellent tool to have in your bag of tricks, it is not always the applications and processes you "know" about that cause your most debilitating issues.

In addition to protecting and controlling your systems that use a standard set of applications based on a corporate desktop image, you also need to understand what else is installed and running on the systems. End users might manually load applications without technical support knowledge, for example. Software that has arrived via unauthorized installations, such as adware and spyware, might also be on the system without your knowledge. Regard-less of how the software or process ended up on the system, you should be aware of it and be ready to protect or reject its use. This chapter explains how CSA provides system software interrogation and reporting through a mechanism called application deployment investigation, which includes the actual investigation process as well as the reporting feature.

Under the Analysis menu shown in Figure 10-1, you have two main options related to application deployment:

  • Application Deployment Investigation

  • Application Deployment Reports

Application deployment investigation is where this chapter begins because it contains the screens necessary to perform the collection of application data. When the investigation job is complete, we conclude the chapter with the reporting feature, which enables administrators to use what they learned from the investigation process.

NOTE

Application deployment investigation is only supported for agents running on Windows systems.
