Chapter Summary

In this chapter, you learned the intricacies of NetBIOS name resolution, which is heavily focused on the use of WINS servers but also uses broadcasts to resolve names when WINS servers are not available.

WINS is important because it allows for NetBIOS name resolution across router boundaries and reduces or eliminates the need for computers to broadcast to register and resolve machine names. Preventing broadcasts is important to maintain performance on today's networks that use Ethernet switches to improve overall network performance.

Next, you learned how to configure NetBIOS name resolution, as well as how to configure WINS replication partners. Then, we discussed the various mechanisms available for managing and monitoring your WINS servers.

You then learned the basic troubleshooting commands and how they are used to diagnose and fix IP configuration problems. The use of the ipconfig utility in particular is important for troubleshooting and resolving basic problems.

Finally, you learned the basics of the Windows Server 2003 name resolution files. These files, hosts and lmhosts, resolve IP names and NetBIOS names, respectively.
