An industry-standard security protocol that is used to authenticate client connections.
record type
One of the various types of entries that can be created in a DNS table.
recursive query
A DNS query that is used to request an authoritative answer or an answer indicating that there is no resolution for a DNS lookup.
registered IP address
Any block of addresses registered with IANA.
registry key
A container for data in the registry data hierarchy.
remote access policy
A policy that is configured on a Routing and Remote Access (RRAS) server that defines conditions that must be met to grant remote access to the network via the server.
remote access profile
A configuration made on a Routing and Remote Access (RRAS) server that contains a number of variables that allow you to further refine the parameters of the remote access policy.
repeater
A physical device that takes a signal from one interface and retransmits it to another. This allows a network segment to be extended beyond the normal distances dictated by the limits of the topology.
replication partner
A server in a WINS architecture that sends or receives a copy of the WINS database from another WINS server.
reservation
A permanent address lease assignment from the DHCP server to a specified client.
resource record
A data record in a DNS zone. Many types of resource records are available. For example, an address resource record is the data record that describes the address-to-name relationship for a host.
reverse lookup
In DNS, an IP address-to-name resolution.
RFC (request for comments)
A document that is used to make notes about the Internet and Internet technologies. RFCs are typically used as the official way to introduce a new Internet standard.
RIP (Routing Information Protocol)
A protocol that dynamic routers use to share their routing tables. Similar to the OSPF and BGP protocols, RIP is an older, less-efficient routing protocol.
root
In a hierarchy, the container that holds all other containers.
route (routing table) utility
A utility that allows you to view and modify the routing table on a Windows computer.
router
A system or device that forwards or drops packets between networks, based on the entries in its routing table.
routing protocol
A type of protocol that is used by dynamic routers to share their routing tables with other routers.
routing table
A table that describes routing decisions that a host can make. Minimum entries in the routing table include routes to each local network and a default route.
RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Service)
A service that allows for remote connection to a server.
