Introduction

What brought the database to the small business? I believe it was Microsoft Access and its $119 price tag, which at the time undercut the competition by orders of magnitude. Running on the relatively recent technology of Windows 3.x, it provided a very powerful tool for businesses that had previously only wished for such technology. Many businesses today are shelling out a lot of money for software for their employees. If you have 200 employees all of whom need an operating system and office suite, it can run to more than $1,000 per employee in licensed software. That s $200,000 to outfit a business with new or upgraded software. Businesses pay it because it is a necessary cost of doing business in today s economy, and that is just for the software. Additional costs include the system administrators, database administrators, and programmers. If your organization is viewing the potential cost savings of a Linux desktop and you are wondering about databases and custom database applications and how to write them, this book is for you.

I believe the time is ripe for businesses to discover the cost savings ”without loss of functionality ”that Linux offers. This book attempts to show that existing client/server skills can be transferred to the Linux arena, and that Linux and Windows can coexist. This book attempts to show that it can be done, and it s not that difficult. There are other books on the market that discuss Star Office and other cross-platform office suites; this work is directed at the Information Systems department that has done some type of client/server programming, such as SQL Server and Visual Basic, and is interested to see how those skills can be leveraged in the Windows environment.

I also believe that every business problem is a database problem and that the cost of capturing, cleaning, and reporting on data is no longer an optional part of doing business. Linux is making great inroads to the desktop market in an attempt to show that custom software applications can be ported to the Linux desktop.
