You have two options when downloading PHP for Windows: go to the official PHP web site, or go to the PHP for Windows project site. Both approaches are explored in the next sections. Option One: The Official PHP Web SitePHP's home and the place where PHP is developed and updated by its open -source community is http://www.php.net/downloads.php, shown in Figure 2.1. You can download PHP for Windows and Linux here. For Windows, you can download the manual and automatic installations. Figure 2.1. The official PHP web site.
Downloading the Manual InstallationUnder the Win32 Binaries heading, click PHP x . x . x zip package to download (this was the PHP 4.0.6 zip package at the time this book was written). Save this file to a convenient place on your hard drive. Manual installation instructions are covered in the section "Installing PHP." Downloading the Automatic InstallerUnder the Win32 Binaries heading, click PHP x . x . x installer to download (this was the PHP 4.0.6 installer at the time this book was written). Save this file to a convenient place on your hard drive. Instructions on using the automatic installer are covered in the section "Installing PHP." Option Two: The php4win Project SiteA great resource site for PHP programmers on the Windows platform is the site www.php4win.com, shown in Figure 2.2. Figure 2.2. The php4win web site.
It's worth noting that you can use installers taken from either site. The steps remain the same. Downloading the Manual InstallerAlthough I call this the manual installer, it is not really what you might expect from a manual installer. It's more a collection of compiled files. The fact that you have to manually install these files is why this method is called a manual installation. From the home page, select the latest build. From there, you are presented with the manual installer file to download. It is packaged as an .exe file, as shown in Figure 2.3. Figure 2.3. The latest PHP build from the php4win web site.
