When I first started using PHP some three years ago, I came from an ASP background and started searching for information that would help me develop PHP solutions on a Windows platform.

PHP is available for the Windows and Linux platforms, but most of its developer audience consists of Linux developers. As such, most books, articles, and web sites show you how to use PHP on the Linux platform. Windows-specific information can often be hard to find.

This book addresses this issue and looks at how to install and start using PHP on the Windows platform. Along the way, we will look at technologies such as the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) and Local Directory Application Protocol (LDAP) and see how to use them with PHP in a Windows environment.

Although this book focuses on the Windows platform, if you are a Linux developer, you still might find it useful. The PHP syntax is the same on both platforms, as are most of the functions. Some developers use Windows for prototyping before uploading their code to a Linux production server.

Note

There are some differences between various Win32 platforms in certain system-specific areas such as logging, file systems, and command execution. It is recommended that you check the PHP manual on the PHP web site for any details that relate to your platform if you are having trouble getting a function to work correctly.

The following chapters should be of interest to both Windows and Linux users:

  • Chapter 3, "PHP Programming"

  • Chapter 4, "PHP and Files"

  • Chapter 5, "PHP and Sessions"

  • The MySQL section of Chapter 6, "PHP and Databases"

If your focus is Linux, the following web sites might help:

  • http://www.phpbuilder.com (also features great resources for Windows PHP development)
