An object in a Microsoft Management Console window that does not contain any other objects.
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP)
An Internet protocol used for client access to an X.500-based directory, such as Active Directory.
link
Generic term referring to the connection between two systems. In Exchange, a link is generally synonymous with a connector.
Link State Algorithm
The process used by Exchange Server 2003 to apply the information in the link state table when determining a route.
link state table
A table maintained by Exchange Server 2003 that specifies the routes a message can pass over and whether any given link on the route is up or down.
Live Communications Server
An enterprise-level real-time communications product that replaces the Exchange Instant Messaging feature in Exchange 2000 Server.
local delivery
The delivery of a message to a recipient object that resides on the same server as the sender.
Local Procedure Call (LPC)
When a program issues an instruction that is executed on the same computer as the program executing the instruction. See also Remote Procedure Call (RPC).
lockbox
The process of using a secret key to encrypt a message and its attachments and then using a public key pair to encrypt and decrypt the secret key.
Lotus Notes Connector
An Exchange Server 2003 connector that allows the exchange of messages and the synchronization of directories between an Exchange organization and a Lotus Notes system.
