Setting Printing Preferences

[Previous] [Next]

Printing preferences include basic settings that you want to apply, by default, to all documents. You can override these default settings for individual documents in your program or in the Print dialog box before you print. The settings you make through printing preferences can include

  • Page orientation—portrait (long edge vertical) or landscape (long edge horizontal)
  • Paper size
  • Paper source or tray
  • Number of copies
  • Page printing order—first to last or last to first
  • Duplex (two-sided) printing
  • Pages per sheet—some printers can print multiple reduced-size pages on each sheet of paper
  • Print quality—a balance of print speed, output quality, and ink consumption
  • Watermark—an image that prints on every page

Not every printer has all these options—and some printers have many, many more. To view and set the printing preferences for one of your printers, right-click its icon in the Printers folder and choose Printing Preferences from the shortcut menu. A dialog box similar to the one shown in Figure 12-7 appears. With some printers, you reach other settings by clicking Advanced; Printing Preferences dialog boxes for other printers include additional tabs with more settings.

NOTE
To change printing preferences for a network printer, you must have Full Control permission for the printer. For information about permissions, see "Installing and Configuring a Printer."
