Chapter 37 -- Manipulating Faxes and Images with Imaging

Chapter 37

Imaging for Windows is a program that lets you view and annotate fax transmissions and other graphics images. (We'll be referring to Imaging for Windows in this chapter simply as Imaging, as the program's name appears on its title bar.) With Imaging, you can create multipage "scrapbook" files of images and faxes and use thumbnails to navigate between pages. You can also use the product to convert documents from one supported graphics file type to another. With three file types—.tif, .jpg, and .bmp—you can add annotations, such as text boxes or freehand drawings, to your images. Imaging can also manage any TWAIN-compliant scanner, allowing you to scan photographs and other documents and save the resulting images in one of the program's native file formats. (TWAIN is the name of a standard interface that enables any capture device, like a scanner, to work with any graphics software, as long as both are designed to be TWAIN-compliant.)

The Imaging for Windows program is supplied by Eastman Software and is a scaled-down version of another Eastman product called Imaging for Windows Professional Edition. Imaging Professional adds such advanced features as optical character recognition (allowing you to turn faxes into editable documents) and the ability to create hyperlinks that connect your local documents with documents on the World Wide Web. If you have an Internet connection, you can read about Imaging Professional by choosing the About command from the Imaging Help menu, clicking Contact Info, and then clicking Visit Web Site.

Imaging includes Imaging Preview, a separate program that lets you preview, rotate, size, and print images—but not annotate them or assemble them into multipage documents. By default, when you double-click a supported image file type in a Windows Explorer window, your file appears in Imaging Preview. If you want to annotate the image, you can then open the full program by choosing Open Image For Editing from the preview program's File menu. (You can also change the program's default behavior so that images open in the full program by default.)
