Chapter 28 -- Using NTFS Security

[Previous] [Next]

Chapter 28

Microsoft Windows 2000 provides the ability to secure access to your computer's resources. Probably your most important securable resources are your files. You can set up your Windows system so that you have complete control over any user's ability to read, write, create, or modify files and folders on your computer, but only if you use the NTFS file system. Originally created for Windows NT, the predecessor to Windows 2000, NTFS is one of three file systems you can use on your computer's hard disks.

In this chapter, we provide an overview of the various file systems. We then show you how to use security on NTFS volumes to secure your files and folders by setting access permissions, how to further protect your files by encrypting them, and how to limit the amount of each user's disk space.
