Look What Your Pen Dragged In . . .

As if it isn't enough that you can use your pen to do mouse clicks and write text, you can also get it to perform the mouse functions of dragging to select things and dragging to move things.

Tap-and-drag selections

Just as you use a mouse to click and drag over text (or cells in a spreadsheet), you can use the pen to make selections. There's not much to know about this, except that you should press the screen gently to avoid damaging it, then drag till what you want to select is highlighted.

Tip  If your computer has a pressure-sensitive feature, you can use the Pen and Highlighter Settings in Windows Journal to turn it on. When you do, by pressing more firmly on your screen you will produce a thicker line. (More about Windows Journal in Chapter 7.)

Drag-and-drop selections

Dragging and dropping to move selections around a document is only slightly more complicated than dragging to select things. That's because it's important that you remove the pen from the screen at a couple of points in the process. Follow these steps to drag and drop with a pen:

  1. Tap and drag to select the text that you want to move.

Tip  You can select both handwritten and typed text.

  2. Lift the tip of the pen off the screen.

  3. Move the pen pointer to somewhere within the selection and then press the tip against the screen.

  4. Drag the selection to another location.

As you drag, the arrow cursor turns into an arrow with a box attached to it.

  5. To drop the selection, lift the pen off the screen.
