Viewing the Outlook Window


Title bar . The title bar displays the name of the current folder, in this case the Inbox folder, followed by the name of the Outlook program.

Menu bar . The menu bar provides the menus of commands you use to accomplish your tasks in Outlook.

Standard toolbar . The Standard toolbar provides buttons you click to quickly execute commands. The buttons on this toolbar change depending on the current view. You can also display the Advanced toolbar for access to additional commands.

Navigation pane . The Navigation pane is your central station for moving around in Outlook. The Folder list is located in the upper portion of the Navigation pane, and the Outlook view bars occupy the lower portion.

Folder list . The Folder list displays the contents of the folder you select. In Outlook you store information in folders and the folder you use depends on the Outlook item you are using. Some of the default folders in Outlook include Inbox, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Notes, Journal, Deleted Items folder, and so on.

Outlook view bars . Click one of the four major Outlook view bars ”Mail, Calendar, Contacts, or Tasks ”to work in that view. You can use the other Outlook views ”Notes, Folder List, or Shortcuts ”by clicking one of the icons located below the view bars.

Folder pane . In Mail view, the middle pane of the Outlook window displays the contents of the folder you select. You can control how the contents are displayed (e.g., by date, order of importance, sender, and so on).

Reading pane . The Reading pane gives you a greater area for reading your e-mail messages without having to scroll to view them.
