Who Should Read This Book

This book is designed to help you meet your certification goals by preparing you for the Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure exam (70-293). In a Windows Server 2003 network, the ability to plan, install, support, and troubleshoot the various networking components and services included with Windows Server 2003 is critical to an administrator's success. Windows Server 2003 tightly integrates services such as DHCP and DNS into the core operating systems as well as the Active Directory, and requires that they be configured correctly to function. This exam touches on all the major networking components critical to a successful Windows Server 2003 implementation. Although volumes of information are available on the history, theory, and underlying applications related to the networking services provided by Windows Server 2003, this book does not cover these portions of the services in detail. The purpose of this book is to provide you with an introduction to these services in general, provide you with an in-depth look at the Windows Server 2003 implementations of these network services, and prepare you to take the exam.

One additional area that is new to the Windows exams is the emphasis on network security. Keeping in line with the Microsoft Trustworthy Computing initiatives, Microsoft is putting a much greater emphasis on the security facets of all its Windows Server 2003 exams.

Recognizing that a great deal of information exists on these topics that this book cannot cover, each chapter in this book contains a section called "Suggested Readings and Resources" that provides you with recommended sources for filling in the blanks. So, although you may not be an expert at planning and implementing complex, multiple-site DNS architectures to support Active Directory, by the time you complete this book, you will know how to start and how to avoid many common pitfalls you might otherwise fall into. Additional resources are presented so that you can further your understanding and take your skills to the next level. (Chapter 3, "Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Name Resolution Infrastructure," discusses planning new DNS namespaces.)

One of the most common questions with any of the Microsoft certification tests is, "Do I need to take a class to pass this test?" Although the information you need to pass the exam is in this book, one thing that is difficult for any book to provide is hands-on experience with the product. If you can set up an environment that enables you to perform the exercises outlined in this book (hardware and software recommendations for this environment are included at the end of this introduction), you will be in good shape. You'll be in especially good shape if you have the opportunity to work with Windows Server 2003 in a production environment. To pass the exam, you do not need to take a class in addition to buying this book. However, depending on your personal study habits or learning style, you may benefit from taking a class in conjunction with studying from this book.

Microsoft specifies the following audience profile for this exam, which also summarizes the experience level that a typical MCSE candidate should possess:

  • The MCSE on Windows Server 2003 credential is intended for IT professionals who work in the typically complex computing environment of medium to large companies.

  • Candidates should have experience implementing and administering a network operating system in environments that have the following characteristics:

    • 250 to 5,000 or more users

    • Three or more physical locations

    • Three or more domain controllers

    • Network services and resources such as messaging, database, file and print, proxy server, firewall, Internet, intranet, remote access, and client computer management

    • Connectivity requirements such as connecting branch offices and individual users in remote locations to the corporate network and connecting corporate networks to the Internet

  • In addition, candidates should have experience in the following areas:
